A song by Carol Johnston
The Long Sleep of the Great Bear
Stories, Myth & Nature 3:42 Date:
Lyrics
And so I go to sleep and know
The last of all mankind.
For when I wake and find them gone
I know I will not mind.
Before my sleep I said goodbye
To those who were the last.
And in my dreams they'll be again
As they were in the past.
But, God I know, and so do you
They were not meant to last.
It only seemed a day had passed
When he was roused from sleep.
He walked along the craggy path.
He saw the ruined keep.
The scent of flowers in the air,
The songs of birds above,
The purple dawn, the sky of blue,
All the things he loved.
He heard the wind among the trees
And blowing 'long the shore.
The Great Bear shook his head & sighed
That mankind was no more.
The Great Bear went back to his cave
It was time to sleep once more
His belly full, his heart was sad
And he curled up on the floor
And in my dreams they'll be again
As they were in the past.
But, God I know, and so do you
They were not meant to last.
They were not meant to last.
They were not meant to last.
